Today is the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 18, 1920, which prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on sex.

And don’t miss a chance to educate children on this topic with Votes for Women Crafts, Friday, August 22, 11:00-3:00! Make a Votes for Women Rosette, Sash, or Suffragette Doll. Celebrate the “Votes for Women Exhibit” before it closes. Fun for all ages, no registration required.

Leading Ladies recently sponsored a visit of a group of wonderful women (picture below) to visit the exhibit, which was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery.  The crusade for women’s suffrage is one of the longest reform movements in American history. Between 1832 and 1920, women citizens organized for the right to vote, agitating first in their states or territories and also, simultaneously, through petitioning for a federal amendment. This dynamic poster exhibition explores the complexity of the women’s suffrage movement and the relevance of this history to Americans’ lives today.

The Leading Ladies tour was led by Historic Beverly Education Manager Krystina Yeager who shared the black-and-white photo accompanying this piece, which features Helen Wales (left) and Beverly Dunham in a carriage decorated for a parade emphasizing the “Women’s Suffrage” movement likely taken at the Fourth of July. The carriage is decorated for the parade with a “Votes for Women” theme on the umbrella. The Andrew Dodge farm is in the background in this view at 200 Dodge Street (Dodge’s Row).
